Garden Highlights: The Feathered Neighbours of the Verdi Suite

Garden Highlights: The Feathered Neighbours of the Verdi Suite: The Verdi Garden Suite is more than just a place to sleep. Specifically, its ground-floor location and private patio place you directly into our mature, indigenous gardens. Because we are situated near the Rietvlei Nature Reserve, our estate serves as a vital corridor for local birdlife. Consequently, you can enjoy a private “safari” from the comfort of your suite. Below are the specific bird species frequently spotted right outside your window.

    Morning Visitors and Bright Colours

Your day will likely begin with the cheerful, bubbling call of the Cape Robin-Chat. These friendly birds are often the first to arrive in the dawn chorus. Furthermore, keep an eye on the flowering shrubs for the Southern Double-collared Sunbird. Their iridescent green and red feathers flash brilliantly in the morning light as they feed on nectar. For this reason, we recommend keeping your binoculars nearby while you enjoy your morning coffee. Likewise, the Crested Barbet is a regular visitor. You can easily identify them by their “speckled” yellow and red faces and their persistent, trilling song.

    The Busy “Garden Crew”

Throughout the day, you will see groups of Cape White-eyes flitting through the trees. These tiny birds are social and move in busy clusters, searching for insects among the leaves. Additionally, the Dark-capped Bulbul is a constant presence. They are famous for their “Cheep-Chop-Tokwick” call and their cheeky, energetic personalities. Because our gardens are lush and well-established, these birds feel completely at home. Therefore, you can observe their natural behaviours without them being disturbed by the outside world.

    Majestic Skies and Evening Calls

As the afternoon fades, look up to see the Hadeda Ibis returning to their roosts. While they are loud, they are a quintessential part of the Pretoria soundscape. Furthermore, you might catch a glimpse of the African Goshawk soaring high above the garden canopy. As night falls, the haunting “hu-hoo” of the Spotted Eagle-Owl often echoes through the estate. Ultimately, staying in the Verdi Garden Suite allows you to reconnect with nature. It provides a peaceful, bird-filled sanctuary that recharges your soul before another busy day.

Car Rental options from Andante Boutique Lodge

Car Rental options from Andante Boutique Lodge: When staying at Andante Lodge, having your own set of wheels is often the difference between a good trip and a great one. Pretoria East is expansive, and while ride-sharing is an option, the freedom of a rental car allows you to explore the nearby game reserves and historic sites on your own schedule.

Here is a guide to navigating car rental options from your arrival at the airport to local hubs in Pretoria.

    1. The Airport Options: O.R. Tambo vs. Lanseria

Most guests will pick up their vehicle immediately upon landing. Both airports house the “Big Five” of the rental world (Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Budget, and Sixt), but the experience differs.

    • O.R. Tambo (JNB): * The Vibe: Massive selection, but can be busy. All kiosks are located in the multi-story parking parkade opposite the domestic arrivals terminal.

      • Pro Tip: If you are arriving on an international flight, use the Avis Preferred or Hertz Gold lanes if you have a membership; it can save you 45 minutes of standing in line.

    • Lanseria (HLA):

      • The Vibe: Much faster and “boutique.” The rental desks are just a few steps from the terminal exit.

      • Pro Tip: Inventory can be lower here than at O.R. Tambo. If you need a specific vehicle (like a large SUV or an automatic), book at least two weeks in advance.

    2. Local Pretoria Rentals (Closest to Andante Lodge)

If you prefer to take a shuttle to the lodge and only rent a car for specific day trips, you don’t need to go back to the airport. Hatfield is the central hub for car rentals in Pretoria and is about a 15–20 minute Uber ride from the lodge.

    Company Location Best For…
SANI / Sixt Stanza Bopape St, Hatfield Premium German vehicles (BMW/Mercedes) and competitive daily rates.
Pace Car Rental ProEquity Court, Hatfield Budget-friendly options and Cash/Debit Card rentals (rare in SA).
Hertz / Avis Hatfield & Menlyn Reliability and easy “one-way” drop-offs if you’re heading to the Kruger next.

    3. Choosing the Right Vehicle for Gauteng

    • The City Slicker (Polo/Corolla): Perfect for navigating Pretoria’s suburbs and getting to business meetings.

    • The Small SUV (Toyota Urban Cruiser/Renault Duster): Our top recommendation. The extra ground clearance is a “back-saver” when navigating some of the older roads or visiting the Rhino & Lion Park.

    • The 4×4 (Toyota Fortuner/Hilux): Only necessary if you plan on heading deep into the more rugged parts of Dinokeng or the Magaliesberg trails.

    Important Logistics & Tips

    • The “Full-to-Full” Rule: Always return the car with a full tank. Airport gas stations (especially at O.R. Tambo) can get crowded, so factor in an extra 15 minutes before your flight.

    • Check the Spare: Before leaving the lot, ensure there is a spare tire and a jack. Our local roads can be unpredictable!

    • E-Tolls: Most rental cars are fitted with e-toll tags. You will be billed for these automatically by the rental agency a few weeks after your trip.

  • Funeral or Memorial or Life-celebration

    Funeral or Memorial or Life-celebration

Funeral or Memorial or Life-celebration: Whenever we suffer a tragic loss of a loved one, we are confronted with so many decisions that have to be made and one of those decisions is what form of service will be best for the occasion.

Amongst many choices there are three dominant choices in our society:

    1. A traditional funeral service
    2. A fitting memorial service
    3. A life celebration gathering

Your special farewell may be any one of these or a subtle combination of all. Our social development has seen us move away from strict tradition and adopt more personalized farewell “services”.

How uplifting it is to celebrate a person’s life spent on earth when the opportunity is created to bestow reflections of appreciation onto a deceased person for how they touched our lives. There definitely is a growing trend to rather celebrate these positives in a respectful and meaningful way.

    Traditional

Traditional funerals and memorial services are still the accepted norm in many societies and tend to be more solemn and structured according to age old tradition.

Whatever form of service you wish to adopt, it needs to be done in a venue of choice. More recently there has been a shift from the tradition of just using a church as final choice of venue. Relaxed, tranquil surroundings are often preferred as it’s considered more appealing due to aesthetics, peaceful surroundings, capacity etc.

Due to the limited numbers allowed at funeral gatherings under Covid regulations, it is virtually impossible to have an intimate, personal experience in a church or hall designed to accommodate hundreds or thousands of people.  It is for this reason that smaller, more intimate venues are preferred to still create a warm, welcoming ambience for those present, even considering the social distancing prescriptions.

Andante Boutique Lodge offers a funeral venue that is most befitting the farewell of a loved one. It’s tranquil setting between many trees and lush gardens creates a peaceful ambience where goodbyes can be said in a beautiful way.

Even though Andante Boutique Lodge is centrally situated only minutes away from the R21 and N1 highways within approximately 8 km from Menlyn Centre, the surroundings create an ambience associated with a rural venue in a natural surrounding.

The venue has a 160 seater hall with all the necessary amenities such as a big screen projector, first class restrooms, refreshment area and ample behind-gate parking. Should you choose to conduct the service in the open, Andante Lodge has an outdoor, open-air chapel that reduces the Covid risk even more. This venue is nestled between huge trees and with it’s tiled flooring and structured layout, it allows for a sophisticated natural ambience with no compromise on modern facilities such as first class restrooms and a beautiful refreshment area.

At Andante Lodge, we will walk the extra mile to ensure the final goodbyes you make to your deceased loved-ones will be gracious and fitting for the occasion.
