Gauteng’s Hidden Gems: Game Reserves Near Andante Lodge

Staying at Andante Lodge offers the unique advantage of being a short drive from some surprisingly diverse wildlife game experiences within Gauteng itself. While not on the scale of the Kruger National Park, these reserves offer fantastic opportunities for day trips, weekend getaways, and immersive encounters with South African fauna, all without needing to fly across the country.

Our closest wildlife haven is a few hundred metres away, as the eagle flies. It is called Rietvallei.

And once you’ve done Rietvlei, jump in your car and follow these directions…

1. Dinokeng Game Reserve:

   • Distance from Andante Lodge: Approximately 45-60 minutes’ drive north.

   • What to Expect: Dinokeng is Gauteng’s only Big 5 game reserve, meaning you have a chance to spot lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. It’s a true conservation success story, with unfenced sections allowing animals to roam more freely. You can self-drive or opt for guided safaris.

   • Accommodation: Dinokeng offers a vast range, from basic campsites and comfortable self-catering chalets to luxurious tented camps and lodges like Thekwane Lodge or Toua Villa, providing private plunge pools and gourmet dining experiences.

   • Transport: Driving is the only practical option. It’s a straightforward drive from Andante Lodge, making it perfect for a day trip or an overnight stay. No need for flying here.

2. Pilanesberg National Park:

   • Distance from Andante Lodge: Approximately 2.5-3 hours’ drive west.

   • What to Expect: Located in an ancient volcanic crater, Pilanesberg is a malaria-free Big 5 reserve known for its stunning landscapes and excellent game viewing. It’s a popular choice for those wanting a comprehensive safari experience without travelling too far from Johannesburg/Pretoria.

   • Accommodation: Options range from affordable self-catering units and comfortable hotel-style lodges (like Bakubung Bush Lodge and Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge with their famous underground hides) to exclusive, private safari lodges offering all-inclusive luxury.

   • Transport: Driving is highly recommended. It’s too close to fly, and the drive, while a bit longer, is scenic and manageable. Consider hiring a car or arranging a private transfer.

3. Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve:

   • Distance from Andante Lodge: Approximately 1.5-2 hours’ drive southwest.

   • What to Expect: While not a traditional “Big 5” free-roaming reserve, this private game reserve offers guaranteed sightings of white rhino, lion, buffalo, cheetah, and various antelope species. It’s more of a wildlife park but provides excellent educational opportunities and close encounters, especially for families. They also have an animal crèche and a reptile park.

   • Accommodation: Limited on-site accommodation, focusing more on day visitors. However, there are guesthouses and lodges in the surrounding Cradle of Humankind area.

   • Transport: Driving is the only way to get there. It’s an ideal half-day or full-day excursion from Andante Lodge.

Flying vs. Driving: A Quick Comparison

• Flying: Not applicable for these Gauteng reserves. The distances are too short, and the time/cost of flying to a small airstrip (if one existed, which generally they don’t for these reserves) would far outweigh the benefits of driving.

• Driving:

  • Pros: Flexibility, cost-effective (especially if self-driving), ability to stop and explore, convenient for day trips.

  • Cons: Traffic during peak hours (especially for Pilanesberg), navigation required.

  • Recommendation: For all Gauteng reserves, driving is the most practical and recommended mode of transport. Guests can rent a car, arrange for a private shuttle, or use ride-sharing services for closer reserves.

Accommodation: From Rustic Tent to Royal Palace

• Tents (Budget-Friendly & Immersive): Many reserves, especially Dinokeng, offer basic camping facilities where you bring your own gear. For a step up, look for permanently erected safari tents that often include beds and shared ablutions, giving you an authentic bush experience at a lower cost.

• Chalet/Cottage (Comfortable & Self-Catering): Ideal for families or those who prefer to cook for themselves. These range from simple, rustic units to well-appointed homes with modern amenities. You get privacy and the flexibility to set your own schedule.

• Lodge Rooms (Mid-Range Comfort): These are typically part of larger lodge complexes, offering en-suite bathrooms, comfortable beds, and often access to a central dining area, pool, and guided activities. They provide a good balance of comfort and safari ambience.

• Luxury Tented Camps (Boutique Safari): Expect beautifully appointed canvas tents on raised decks, often with private verandas, en-suite bathrooms (sometimes outdoor showers!), and high-end finishes. These camps prioritize intimacy, excellent service, and often include all meals and guided game drives.

• Exclusive Safari Villas/Palaces (The Ultimate Indulgence): At the top end, you’ll find private villas or suites within luxury lodges. These often come with dedicated guides and vehicles, private chefs, plunge pools, and opulent interiors. They offer unparalleled privacy and bespoke experiences, akin to a “palace in the bush.“
